Incredible Therapeutic Health Benefits of Fly Fishing

Incredible Therapeutic Health Benefits of Fly Fishing

Tom Hammond

Fly fishing is a method of fishing that utilises an artificial, lightweight lure (as an imitation of an insect) on top of the water in order to catch the fish required. It is becoming an increasingly popular hobby in the UK now, with more and more people choosing to pick up the rod and try out fishing than ever before! But what about the health benefits, if any? Well, there are numerous; both for the body and for the mind. Read on to find out more about the incredible therapeutic health benefits that fly fishing has to offer.

 Physical health

  • Lower cortisol levels

Numerous studies have shown that individuals who take up fishing experience lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) after they have been fishing. Anglers will therefore experience lower levels of anxiety, stress, and depression as a result of fishing, alongside better quality of sleep.

  • Brain health

Even just being around nature and breathing in the fresh air is enough to boost physical and mental health. Fly fishing evens out levels of melatonin in the brain (helping you to control your sleep cycle) and significantly reduces feelings of tiredness since you are outside for long periods of time. This activity also allows you to take a break and recharge from the toll that daily life can take on us.

  • Workout

Spending a prolonged period of time in the water will allow you to exercise without even noticing it! Setting up, casting off, and catching as many fish as possible calls for a decent level of strength, especially if you’re going for larger varieties. This will engage the back, arms, shoulders, legs, and core in an active, healthy workout. Fly fishing is considered a lower impact form of activity when compared to highly intensive cardiovascular workouts but is underestimated as a form of exercise!

 Mental health

  • Concentration and patience

Being dependent on technology has left us with significantly reduced attention spans, and our minds have suffered as a result. Since we’re all gripped to our phones, and our attention is pulled in a thousand different directions by social media and the various apps we use, it makes sense to disconnect from the world every now and again. Fly fishing provides you with the perfect way to do this; the process can have a powerfully mindful and meditative effect on the brain that helps to improve concentration and patience across long periods of time.

  • Helps fight depression and anxiety

Those anglers who are already battling in the continuous struggle against depression and anxiety find that fishing in the outdoors provides them with a fantastic therapeutic effect. Being close to nature is a mood-booster in itself and the moving water provides a beautiful setting for a naturally meditative state.

  • Improves self-esteem and resilience

Continually improving at any form of exercise or activity will build a sense of self-esteem and resilience within an individual to keep going and consistently assess their results against their previous best, building confidence as they go. With fly fishing this can take many forms, from trying to catch the largest fish possible to catching as many fish as you possibly can in a given time.

  • Bond building

Fishing is largely known for being a fantastic way to strengthen existing bonds with your friends or family. It presents us with an opportunity to exchange stories and conversation while enjoying the outdoors – what could be better!
